Gov. Jonah Jang appoints Son as Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development

Nigeria politics these days seems to be becoming more of family affair now as politician now prefer to install their immediate family members to take up some sensitive positions in the leadership circle.

This is the case of Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau state who just appointed one of his sons, Yakubu Jang, as the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Planning in the state.
It would be recalled  that before now, Yakubu Jang has been serving as his father's Special Adviser on Special duties.

His appointment was announced yesterday sunday by the commissioner for information Mohammed Abubakar. He got the appointment after the former land commissioner Yilji Gomwalk resigned to pursue his political ambition as a running mate to  Mr Gyang Pwajok, the PDP gubernatorial flag bearer in the state.

Boko Haram Adopts 185 women and children, and kills 35 others.

Boko Haram insurgents kidnapped at least 185 women and children, and killed 32 people in a raid in northeastern Nigeria weekend, local officials and residents said.

Gunmen in pickup trucks attacked the village of Gumsuri, just north of Chibok on Sunday, burning homes and shooting men, before herding women and children together.
They gathered the women and children and took them away in trucks after burning most of the village with petrol bombs,” a local government official said on condition anonymity for fear of reprisal.

News of the attack took four days to emerge due to lack of communication resulting from the loss of telecommunications towers in the region during previous attacks.

Facebook is Considering adding dislike button- Zuckerberg

Facebook is thinking about adding a way to “dislike” posts on its site, founder Mark Zuckerberg has said.
Speaking at a Q&A session in California, he said it was one of the most requested features the social network receives from its
users.
He said the site would need to find a way to make sure it did not become a way to demean people’s posts.
According to Facebook’s own figures, 4.5 billion “likes” are generated every day.
“One of things we’ve thought about for quite a while is what’s the right way to make it so that people can easily express a broader
range of emotions,” Mark Zuckerberg told an audience at Facebook’s headquarters.
“A lot of times people share things on Facebook that are sad moments in their lives.
Often people tell us that they don’t feel comfortable pressing ‘like’ because ‘like’ isn’t the appropriate sentiment.
“Some people have asked for a dislike button because they want to say, ‘That thing isn’t good.’ That’s not something that we think is
good for the world.
“The thing that I think is very valuable is that there are more sentiments that people want to express.” Fake likes
Facebook’s Like button has been criticised as being a method by which the social network collects data on its users’ browsing habits.
The system has also come under fire due to a high volume of “fake likes” – when the popularity of a brand or piece of content is
inflated artificially.
Facebook has moved to combat the trade of so-called “like farming” – businesses that, for a price, will provide a huge number of likes quickly. This will be via automated robots, or by a network of humans paid a tiny sum for each click.
An investigation by the BBC in July 2012 showed that a fake company, set up by the BBC, could gain thousands of “likes” –
despite the fact that the company, which promised bagels via the internet, was quite clearly bogus.
On closer inspection, many of the “likes” appeared to come from accounts that were not real people. Hardly any of the “likes”
originated from places like the UK or US – instead the majority originated in places such as the Philippines.
Facebook has initiated legal action against firms offering “fake likes” or other bogus business practices on the social network.
Nervous advertisers
Any enhanced method for expressing sentiment – particularly negatively – would be likely to make advertisers nervous, said
Paul Coggins, chief executive of ad firm Adludio.
“Facebook’s big concern is revenue,” he told
the BBC.
“They need to keep their advertisers happy. I would think it highly unlikely that they would come up with a button that says you can
‘dislike’.
“I think they will extend the success of the like button, which has been huge. Rather than have a quick yes-no, which is a bit black and white, my guess is that they’ll probably look to do something with a bit more sentiment around it.”
Mr Coggins suggested buttons which would indicate how a user feels, rather than a direct “dislike”.
Guy Phillipson, chief executive of the Internet Advertising Bureau UK, said brands are now used to being openly criticised online.
“If brands do put something out which people don’t like, they find out pretty quickly.
It’s been a force for good – advertisers know more about tone, or when they’ve gone too far.”

Madonna University Boils as School Senate Suspends 30 Nursing Students.

Choi, Eyaaaaah!
About 30 nursing students of Madonna University Elele has been suspended for one full academic year by the school management for allegedly absconding from the school rented apartment and over staying their posting period for clinical exposures at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, Imo state.
According to Nigerian Times, The suspension letter reads in part:
Investigation and evidence brought before the Senate committee on discipline revealed that you (30 suspended students) absconded from the original accommodation (hostel) assigned to you by the university during your clinical at Owerri and rented a house outside without the school’s authorization.
“Consequently, the University authority has decided that you should be suspended from the institution for one academic year.
Accordingly, you are hereby suspended. Your due date for resumption of studies in the campus will be October 2015.

The media reported that the letter was signed by the university’s registrar, C. A Ezeh, and dated November 20, 2014, but handed to the 30 affected students on December 5, 2014.
It also confirmed that trouble started when a total of 169 nursing students who were on a clinical exposure at FMC Owerri were forced by the Madonna University Management to reside in a rented 14 rooms apartment where about 12 students were made to live inside a room.
Many of the students immediately rejected this arrangement, opting rather to put up with their parents, guardians and friends in Owerri.
It was against this backdrop that the university management chose to use their sledge hammer on the final year students whose tuition fees were recently hiked from
N400, 000 to about 560, 000.

According to one of the affected students, the person allegedly behind the students’ suspension is one Rev. Sister Mark Anthony, who allegedly pocketed about N1.8 million out of the money meant for their accommodation.
When quizzed, a student said: “Actually, an accommodation was rented by Rev. Sister Anthony for 69 students, but the Rev sister chose to pocket part of the money and squeezed 169 students into a facility that was originally meant for only 69 students.

“Rev Sister Anthony had threatened that most of the students who opposed their being forced into the rented school accommodation would embark on suspension
for one academic session, even before the Senate of the university sat to take a look into the matter.
“Madona University is just looking for ways to shortchange its students so that their parents and guardians will have to cough out N560, 000 for the 30 suspended students and also
pay another N560,000 when students resume from their suspension. This is unacceptable.

Where are we going to get the money? Why is this happening at this time in Nigeria?”
“We want the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission to redress this abnormally before the situation deteriorates further,” another suspended student said.
Meanwhile, leader of the disciplinary committee set up by the institution, Mr Forbella, however said the decision to suspend the students was reached after the University Senate met.

“It was realized that some of the students ran foul of laws governing Madonna University, hence a punitive measure was taken against them while others were freed,” he said.
Efforts were made to reach the proprietor of the school, Reverend Father Emmanuel Edeh, to react on the matter but he was not picking his calls.
